Historic Highlandlake, Inc. - a nonprofit, 501 (c)3 member supported, historical society - is dedicated to: preserving the rich history of the Highlandlake and Mead, Colorado region, the Preservation of local historical buildings and sites, and an active, educational outreach to the community at large.
Our 97th Annual Pioneer Day is taking place on June 10, 2018 in Highlandlake/Mead This event is our annual fund raiser, helping to cover the costs of our various projects including community education, our future mini museum highlighting the history of area irrigation and Mead family history, plus maintenance on our historic properties.
For our main event we are welcoming back the Denver-based Buffalo Soldiers. Last year they were a huge hit and are guaranteed to bring in larger crowds this year. This year we have a large field available for them to do their full maneuvers, demonstrate their mastery on horseback, colorful storytelling, and color guard and flag retirement ceremonies. They will stay for the remainder of our event answering questions, and interacting with visitors.
Our second feature is the “Legendary Ladies.” They are portraying four influential Colorado women from the old west. Their cast of characters include: Klondike Kate; Dr. Susan Anderson (she was the inspiration for the TV series Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman), Mary Rippon, The first female professor at CU Boulder; Ellis Meredith, suffragette; Calamity Jane; and Prairie Rose Henderson.
Additionally to the above, we will have our usual wagon rides, demonstrations of pioneer crafts, plenty of food, and fun.
