Historic Highlandlake, Historical Society
is inviting
all Mead area Middle and High school students to enter
our first annual
"A Moment in Mead's History"
Essay Invitational
Students in two age brackets, 6th - 8th grades and 9th - 12th grades, and who live in the Mead schools attendance area, are invited to enter. This includes students who attend charter schools, are home-schooled, or attend other public schools, but live in the defined attendance area.
Submissions must be (for grades 6-8, 1,000-1,200 words -- grades 9-12, 1,200 - 1,500 words) essays on any person, place, thing, or event in Mead, Colorado's history, that occurred at least 25 years ago (1985 or earlier).
Students should cite at least one primary and one secondary source, but more sources are encouraged.
Essays should include a sentence or two as to why the student feels that the topic they are writing about is important to Mead's history. Extra points will be given for additional sources, both primary and secondary. In other words, if two essays are equal in content, spelling, and grammar, but one has three primary and four secondary sources, and the other only the minimum required, then the one with the additional sources will be given preference over the one with only two sources.
Entries will be judged on content, spelling, grammar, and references/sources.*
* Please note: The Historic Highlandlake website should be considered a secondary source, unless you are using one of our scanned images of a primary source, such as a newspaper clipping.
