deacon Lorin Cassandre mead-founder of Highlandlake
Lorin Cassandre, the son of Rufus and Anna Janes Mead, was born on his
parent’s farm in Cornwall, Addison County, Vermont, on March 12, 1832.
One of nine children, Lorin, or L.C. as he was often called, first
attended the local public schools and after graduation enrolled in
Castleton Seminary, the oldest institution of higher learning in
Vermont.
Mary Bumstead
Coates was born in Roxbury, (Boston) MA on July 10, 1863, the daughter of Deacon
E. B. and Rebecca D. Bumstead of
Eliot Congregational Church in
Roxbury. Mary grew up in the Boston
area where she eventually graduated from the
Normal Art School. At about the age of 25, Mary traveled to
Worcester, South Africa.
Paul Mead was the son of Dr. Martin
Luther and Myra Mahetabel Jenkins Mead. Martin was the
brother of Lorin C. Mead who founded Highlandlake. In the
early 1880s.
The Wessly Kerr family came to Colorado in 1860, settling in Lyons, Boulder,
Colorado. They had two sons and two daughters, and rumor has it that Ida was
closely related to the famous outlaws - the James Brothers.
The Longmont Ledger printed a special edition on September
4, 1903, commemorating Longmont's 25th anniversary. One full
page of this issue was devoted to Highlandlake. Complete
with several photos and brief biographies of local
residents, this page is a valuable insight into what
Highlandlake was in its heyday.
